Personal Biography

Growing up in Tulsa, first at the foot of Reservoir Hill and then just west of Tulsa Country Club, we were always close to the woods.  As young kids, we would hike the woods during the day and ride our bikes downtown at night.  Later, we played never ending games of sandlot baseball, football, and basketball – whatever was in season.  My wife, Donna, and I met while attending OSU.  We have both since learned much about life through watching our three children grow into remarkable adults.

I worked my way through law school in various accounting functions, including a position as an international tax specialist for a multi-national corporation and tax manager with an international public accounting firm.

After I earned my Masters in Law degree (LL.M) in estate planning and federal income taxation from SMU, I commenced my legal career with two very fine Tulsa law firms handling securities/business/estate planning matters and developing a tax planning and business transactions practice for a litigation firm.  Thereafter, I assisted an out of state Fortune 300 Company primarily with mergers and acquisitions. This practical experience and exposure has proven more invaluable than I ever could have imagined, as both an estate planner and a business attorney.

I returned to Tulsa to join a regional hotel chain, with national aspirations, as its General Counsel.  Subsequently, I participated in two startups as their General Counsel.  During this same time I established a private practice focused on estate planning and business matters. My experience as in-house counsel, where I was part of the management team, gave me a very unique perspective when I now represent business clients and when I assist business owners with their estate planning needs.

In my estate planning practice, I assist high net worth clients consider and then adopt sophisticated estate plans which accomplish their personal objectives while employing the most tax efficient strategies available.  I also help those on the cusp of having a taxable estate consider their unique and challenging opportunities, as well as assisting families implement simple, straight forward plans designed to hold or distribute their property among their family members.

I also have a broad based business practice helping clients: (i) purchase and sell businesses and pursue other business opportunities; (ii) adopt appropriate structures when starting a business; (iii) restructure or recapitalize existing businesses; and (iv) structure and implement succession plans designed to help continue a business after current ownership can no longer lead.
